Soul Cakes

I wish I could capture the smell in the kitchen this morning. There is so much warmth and sweetness and earthiness in the melding of fragrant allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and apricot wafting from the oven. Our anticipation is rising as we wait patiently for our soul cakes to be ready to enjoy.

Soul cakes mark the end of Samhain. Samhain is a pagan celebration that marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the winter, midway between the solstice and equinox. Daylight hours are fading and days are growing colder. All of nature is readying itself for rest, hibernation and renewal. The giving and receiving of these traditional round biscuit-like spiced cakes commemorates those who have passed on.

Remembering our loved ones today and always.
Blessed Samhain!
